The 2021 GLA comes with styling that is in-line with Mercedes’ larger SUV models. Upfront, the car has a large radiator grille flanked by LED headlights, and a bumper which gives it a pseudo off-roader look, while at the back, it features split LED tail lamps, a large tail gate, deep bumper with twin exhaust outlets.
Inside, the Mercedes GLA 35 AMG price gets customers various upholstery colour choices and interior trim options, with the AMG Line (GLA 220d 4Matic) variant comes with microfibre upholstery and aluminium trim.
Features such as 10.25-inch touchscreen, digital instrument panel, NTG 6 with MBUX, Mercedes me connect, front wireless charger, panoramic sunroof, Alexa and Google voice integration, remote engine start (except GLA 200), ambient lighting, among others are offered.
Safety is well catered to with 7 airbags, ABS, EBD, ESP, Pre-Safe, Active Brake Assist, Active Bonnet, Active Brakes, and Attention Assist systems.Powertrain options include a 1.3-litre petrol engine for the GLA 200 (163 HP and 250 Nm), 2.0-litre diesel (190 HP and 400 Nm) for GLA 200d and 220d 4Matic. The petrol engine comes mated to a 7-speed DCT, while the diesel models have an 8-speed DCT.
The Mercedes GLA 35 AMG 4Matic is the 13th CKD model and the 3rd AMG model added to the brand’s Indian product portfolio.
Visually, the Mercedes GLA 35 AMG is more mean-looking than the regular model. It comes with the AMG-specific exterior enhancements like the AMG grille, sporty bumper, 19-inch alloy wheels, twin chrome exhausts, twin diffusers, and a spoiler. Look inside and the same sporty theme would have been carried forward. There is a flat bottom steering wheel, sports seats with Artico/Dinamica microfibre upholstery, and a suite of latest features as already discussed above.
Powering the Mercedes GLA 35 AMG is a 2.0-litre petrol motor good for 306 HP at 5800 RPM and 400 Nm of torque from 3000-4000 RPM. The engine comes paired with a 8-speed DCT. This sporty model can do the 0-100 km/hr sprint in 5.1 seconds and go on to hit a top speed of 250 km/hr.
Both 2021 GLA and Mercedes GLA 35 AMG come with 8-year warranty on engine and transmission, in addition to the 3-year comprehensive warranty. The carmaker has announced that the prices of the GLA range, which was supposed to be launched by April, will be increased by Rs. 1.50 lakhs on 1st July 2021.
The powertrain is the same as what you’d find in the A35, and unlike that car that’s better differentiated over the regular A-Class Limousine, the GLA35 looks quite similar to the AMG Line-equipped GLA that’s also available here. While that dampens the enthusiasm a bit, the GLA35’s variable damping suspension and associated componentry, as well as the large cross-drilled brakes are lifted from the AMG catalogue so it does stand out as being a worthy bridge between the merely cosmetically-enhanced and full-fat AMG models.
Firing up the motor, you’d definitely be hard pressed to tell the GLA35 is an AMG model. It’s only when you toggle it into the Sport or Sport+ drive mode that you hear some volume from the engine, amplified as it is in the cabin. From the outside, the GLA35 doesn’t sound half as bonkers as the GLA45 did, with all its pops and crackles on the overrun, but does have a nice raspy blat as you take it through the rev band, right up to the 6,400rpm redline.
While it would be easy to declare that the AMG badge has lost some its appeal, now appearing on cars without the “special” handbuilt engines, there’s no denying the gap in performance from this Mercedes GLA 35 AMG to larger AMGs being very slim indeed. However, I think the A35 and Mercedes GLA 35 AMG face their biggest threat from the blue roundel; the BMW M340i, presents a more enticing performance car package for not much more. It is, however, a sedan, so between the two entry-level AMGs, the Mercedes GLA 35 AMG stands out for offering more usable performance just by virtue of its body style.
