Bentley revealed its first ever SUV, the Bentley Bentayga W-12 at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show a few months back. This is the first time the British brand has touched the SUV segment in its entire history. The launch models of the Bentayga will come with a 600 BHP, 6.0-litre, W12 petrol engine. Later, we can also see 7-seat editions and plug-in hybrid technology being added to the line-up.
Now the engineers at the company have confirmed that the Bentley Bentayga will also come with a diesel engine with electric turbocharging. The car will borrow the diesel engine from the upcoming Audi SQ7 which is a performance version of the Audi Q7 SUV. The Audi SQ7 itself is expected to launch sometime in the following year.
Bentley has not revealed any details regarding its diesel engine, hence none of the engine specifications can be confirmed, but we can assume that since the SQ7 will be using 4.0-litre V8 diesel engine with electric turbocharging, the Bentley Bentayga W-12 will have similar specifications as well. Also, the SQ7 engine is said to produce 428 BHP with 850 Nm of torque. The SUV might come with two engine options, one being the powerful W12 and the other being a smaller V8 engine.
The Bentley Bentayga W-12 will come with electric turbocharging, these use electric motors to spin up the turbos before the hot exhaust gases are funnelled into it. This helps to eliminate the lag entirely and drastically improves throttle response. Basically meaning that the turbos are always spooled up.
The presence of the diesel drivetrain under the bonnet of the four-wheel drive luxury SUV, shows the dominance of diesel engines in the SUV sector. The prices of the Bentley Bentayga W-12 has still not been revealed, but we can expect it to be priced just north of the most expensive Range Rover. The main competitors for the Bentayga will be the Porsche Cayenne diesel, Land Rover Range Rover and Maserati Levante.
The Bentley Bentayga W-12 also gets very stylish alloy wheels and overall the vehicle seems like a well-finished luxurious product. From certain angles, it does remind us of the Audi Q5/Q7 though. Talking about the interiors, well, what can you expect from a Bentley. Top class materials obviously have been used but the design is just too good. The styling is very smooth-flowing everywhere and the combination of wooden trim and dual-tone leather looks very suave. There are a good amount of buttons to fiddle around with but not so many that would confuse the driver.
The Bentley Bentayga W-12 comes with features like panoramic sunroof, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with 60 GB hard drive, removable 10.2-inch tablet with 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth for rear passengers, Naim audio system producing 1950 Watts. The party piece of the SUV is the huge number of customisations that are available. There are 90 exterior hues, 15 carpet options, seven handcrafted veneers, 15 choices of interior trim hide and lots of alloy wheel designs ranging from 20-inch to 22-inch. The vehicle also comes with Drive Dynamics Mode, Off-Road Setting, adjustable springs with four ride height options, Traffic Assist, Park Assist and Adaptive Cruse Control.
Powering the fastest, most powerful and most exclusive SUV in the world is a 6-litre twin-turbocharged W12 TSI engine that belts out 608 PS of power at 5250-6000 RPM and 900 Nm of torque at 1250-4000 RPM. The engine is mated to a ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox and the Bentayga has permanent AWD. It comes with ventilated discs all around. The SUV has a top speed of 301 km/hr and the run from 0-100 km/hr takes just 4.1 seconds. The fuel tank capacity is 85-litres. The vehicle has a combined fuel efficiency of 12.8 km/l.
